Why are my images sideways in emails?

Troubleshoot why images are showing sideways in email.

Updated over a year ago

Certain image files contain EXIF metadata that control the image orientation - this is more common with images that were captured on mobile devices and then reoriented. This orientation may be supported on some devices but ignored by others - resulting in your images sometimes appearing sideways with select versions of the Microsoft Outlook app for desktop computers.

The easiest workaround is to rotate the photo in image editing software and use the export function to create a new copy of the image, which will not include the orientation metadata. There are other, more technical ways to remove the EXIF metadata, such as the one outlined here.
