How to import your current subscriber list into Seguno

Import existing subscribers into Shopify so they sync automatically with Seguno Email Marketing and are ready for campaigns and automations.

Seguno Email Marketing automatically syncs subscribers from Shopify. To use Seguno successfully, Shopify must be the primary system of record for your subscriber list. If subscriber data is already synced with Shopify, no manual import is required.

Before you import subscribers

Seguno does not import subscribers directly. All subscriber data must first exist in Shopify. Seguno then automatically detects Shopify customers who are marked as subscribed and makes them eligible for newsletters and automations.

Note:

All subscriber imports are subject to review by Seguno deliverability.

Prepare your subscriber list

Reviewing and cleaning your list before importing helps protect deliverability and reduce sending costs.

Consider the source and opt-in permissions

Only contacts who explicitly opted in to email marketing should be imported as subscribed.

Before importing, confirm that:

  • Contacts opted in to receive marketing from your brand

  • The list has been emailed recently, ideally within the last six months

  • Consent was collected in compliance with applicable laws

Warning:

Importing contacts without proper consent can result in sending restrictions or account review.

Clean inactive and bounced contacts

Remove or unsubscribe contacts who are unlikely to engage.

Use your previous email platform to identify contacts who:

  • Hard bounced

  • Repeatedly soft bounced

  • Have not opened or clicked emails in the last six months, based on sending cadence

Update these contacts to unsubscribed before exporting your list.

Tip:

Contact Seguno Support or click the Help messenger icon in the bottom-right corner of the app to request a deliverability review and list-cleaning recommendations before importing.

Import subscribers into Shopify

Once subscribers exist in Shopify, Seguno automatically syncs them.

To import your subscriber list to Shopify:

  1. Export a CSV file of subscribed contacts from your current email provider.

  2. Download Shopify's customer import template from the Shopify Help Center.

  3. Copy subscriber data into the Shopify template, matching column headers exactly. Learn more about importing customer lists from Shopify.

  4. In Shopify Admin, click Customers.

  5. Click Import customers.

  6. Click Add file and select the CSV file.

  7. Click Import customers.

    1. Optional:

      1. Select Overwrite existing customers with the same email or phone to update existing Shopify profiles.

      2. Leave fields blank only if you want Shopify to clear those values.

Note:

For large imports, Seguno may request additional background information. If required, a banner linking to a questionnaire appears in the Seguno: Email Marketing app.

Sync additional sign-up sources

Ensure all other subscription sources are connected to Shopify so new subscribers sync automatically.

Common sources include:

  • Shopify Point of Sale

  • Facebook Lead Ads

Automatic syncing ensures subscribers are available immediately for newsletters and automations.

Create segments in Shopify

Segments control who receives newsletters and enters automations.

If segments existed in a previous email service provider, recreate them in Shopify. Shopify automatically keeps segment membership up to date, and Seguno uses these segments for targeting.

Recommended starter segments

  • Engage first-time customers: First-time customers who opted in to email marketing

  • Engage high-value customers: High-spend customers with recent purchases

  • Re-engage customers: Previously engaged customers who have gone inactive
