What is spam protect?

Updated over a week ago

Spam Protect is a list-cleaning tool that will monitor your account and unsubscribe bad email addresses before they hurt your deliverability. These bad email addresses are primarily either invalid or fake signups that would have resulted in bounces or spam complaints.

Even a small dose of bounces and complaints can hurt your ability to reach your subscribers' inboxes. Spam Protect improves your reputation as a sender and reduces bounces and complaints.

Activating Spam Protect

Agreeing to activate Spam Protect means we immediately unsubscribe any bad email addresses on your list. Spam Protect will continue to clean any new subscribers. Any new subscribers that may get flagged as bad email addresses will be automatically unsubscribed. Bad email addresses will not trigger the Welcome automation to protect your deliverability.

Spam Protect must be activated before you can send newsletters to your existing subscribers. You will get to see a count of how many will be cleaned before agreeing to move forward in a banner at the top of our app:

activate spam protect

After clicking the Activate, the banner will change to show that list cleaning is in progress. Once complete, the banner will change to show the following, and you are ready to send newsletters.

Which subscribers will be cleaned?

Invalid email addresses and fake signups from people or spambots are the targets for Spam Protect. Spambots are automated computer programs that scour the internet for forms on websites to submit.

How do I find cleaned subscribers?

Seguno applies a "cleaned-email-spam-protect" tag to all email addresses that were unsubscribed through Spam Protect.

To view the list of cleaned subscribers:

  1. From your Shopify Admin, go to Customers, then Segments.

  2. Create a new segment using customer_tags CONTAINS 'cleaned-email-spam-protect'

  3. Save your segment to review it easily in the future.

What if a real subscriber gets cleaned?

We apologize in advance if this ever happens. Spambots do submit real email addresses, and if the address is compromised, it will be unsubscribed. It is rare that someone with a compromised email wants to subscribe to your newsletter, but if you hear from a customer that says they never received your Welcome email and then you see the "cleaned-email-spam-protect" tag on their customer record, contact Seguno Support and let us know. We will mark them as allowed to receive your email, and Spam Protect will save that setting for future sending.
