Import existing contacts from another email marketing platform to Seguno.

Updated over 11 months ago

Seguno uses your customers in Shopify to identify subscribers. Customers who are marked as subscribed are automatically detected by Seguno and are eligible to receive marketing emails through Seguno. If you are coming from another email marketing platform, you may need to import your existing contacts from that platform as customers in Shopify.

Prepare your list for import

Consider the source

Contacts imported into Shopify must have subscribed to your current store. Contacts subscribed to a different brand or shop you previously operated should not be imported as subscribed to your current shop. Importing contacts from your previous shop will likely result in customers reporting your emails as unsolicited or spam.

Consider the opt-in permissions

When importing a list from a different email provider, it is recommended that the list has been emailed recently (recommended timeframe is within six months) and that they've opted-in to receive marketing from this brand.

Tip: If you are rebranding an old shop, send your subscribers an announcement-style email calling out both the old and new brand in the email's subject line and primary content. We recommend listing the old brand name in your pre-header text for your first few emails from the new brand. Ex: MP Boutique is now Madison Paige.

Consider tagging customers

Your contact list was likely generated from multiple marketing efforts (ex: POS system, lead-gen ads). Consider tagging customers when you import them to track their source and send them more relevant emails.

Clean your list of inactive and bounced contacts

Cleaning your list before importing and sending can reduce your monthly cost with Seguno and improve your email deliverability and inbox placement. Sending emails to an old, dirty list is a quick way to end up in the spam or junk folder, damaging your chances of reaching your best customers. Use your previous email platform to identify all contacts who have hard bounced, had repetitive soft bounces, or have not opened/clicked your emails within the last six months (depending on your sending cadence.) Update these contacts to "unsubscribed" in your email list or export them in a separate file so that you can update them to unsubscribed in Shopify.

Import subscribers to Shopify

Seguno uses your Shopify customers "accepts marketing" status to determine your subscribers. This allows you to manage your customers and subscribers all in Shopify. Importing new subscribers is done through your Shopify admin Customers tab.

To import subscribers to Shopify:

  1. Download Shopify's customer import template.

  2. Copy your subscriber list (and all information you want to import) to the customer import template.

  3. In the Accepts Marketing column, mark all subscribed customers as "yes" .

  4. From your Shopify Admin, navigate to Customers.

  5. Click Import.

  6. Click Add file.

  7. Select the file.

  8. Click Import Customers.

Note: Email addresses can only exist once within a shop. Use the overwrite option to make sure the status is updated for customers that already exist in Shopify.

Sync your list from Mailchimp

For merchants migrating from Mailchimp, use the Mailchimp integration to simplify the import process. The integration allows you to import your list to Seguno without disrupting your existing automations in Mailchimp, while maintaining compliance with anti-spam laws.

This connection will transfer your subscriber's email, first name, last name, and subscription status into a Shopify customer record. When migrating to Seguno from Mailchimp, it is recommended that you keep this connection for at least two weeks to sync any late unsubscribe requests that come from your final Mailchimp emails.

To connect the Mailchimp integration:

  1. Navigate to the Dashboard, then Connections.

  2. Select Mailchimp.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Connecting to Mailchimp will prompt you to log in with your Mailchimp credentials and select which list to sync and whether to transition your contact tags and VIP status. This connection transfers the contact's email, first name, last name, and subscription status into a customer record in Shopify. Optionally, you may sync contact tags and VIP status from Mailchimp as part of the initial sync.

Warning: This sync will also detect any contact deletion in Mailchimp as an unsubscribe. Before deleting contacts from Mailchimp, make sure to do a complete list export and disconnect through your Seguno settings.
