Add a background image to an email in Seguno Email Marketing

Learn how to add and format a background image in Seguno emails, including tiling, image size tips, and mobile limitations.

Updated over a month ago

Background images fill the outer margin space behind your email content in Seguno Email Marketing. Use a background image to add brand colors, textures, or patterns to a newsletter or automation.

Background images do not replace content blocks and may not appear on all devices. Avoid placing important marketing content inside a background image.

Add a background image

Follow these steps to add a background image to a newsletter or automation email:

  1. Open the Editor for a newsletter or automation.

  2. Click Theme settings.

  3. Click Background image.

  4. Click Select image.

  5. Choose an image from your files.

  6. Click Select to confirm.

The background image applies to the current theme.

Note:

To use different background images for newsletters and automations, change the theme assigned to each email. Learn more about changing your theme.

Image requirements and formatting

Tile image

By default, the background image stretches to fill the available margin space. The image scales based on email length and screen width.

To prevent stretching:

  • Select Tile image to repeat the image at its original size.

  • Use tiling for patterns or small design elements

Tip:

Tiled images work best for repeating textures or branded patterns.

When Tile image is not selected:

  • The image stretches to cover the entire background.

  • Small images may appear blurry or pixelated.

non-tiled image

With the Tile image button selected:

  • The image repeats vertically.

  • The image maintains its original size and clarity.

Image size

Use larger images to reduce blurriness when stretching.

Recommended guidelines:

  • Width: approximately 2,000 pixels

  • File size: under 1 MB

Larger dimensions improve clarity. Smaller file sizes reduce load time.

GIFs

Some email clients, including certain versions of Microsoft Outlook, do not animate GIF background images.

Possible behavior:

  • Only the first frame of the GIF displays

  • Animation does not play

Mobile Behavior

On smaller screens and most mobile devices:

  • The email body adjusts to fit the screen width.

  • The background image does not display.

Do not rely on a background image to communicate essential information.

Warning:

Do not place calls to action, discount codes, or required messaging inside a background image.

Common issues
