How to send an email to customer segments or past email activity

Send newsletters in Seguno: Email Marketing using Shopify customer segments or past email engagement.

This article explains how to send a newsletter in Seguno: Email Marketing using Shopify customer segments or previous email activity. Use customer segments to target subscribers based on Shopify data, or use previous email activity to target subscribers based on how they interacted with past emails.

Customer segments in Shopify

Shopify customer segments create dynamic groups based on customer data and actions. As customers meet or no longer meet the segment filters, they are automatically added or removed.

Segments can use data from:

  • Customer records

  • Order history

If your shop has made over 100 sales, Shopify's Predicted Spend Tiers are available for your segment filters.

Tip:

Use Shopify's reference guide for a complete walk-through of all available segment filters.

To view Shopify segment templates:

  1. From the Shopify admin, go to Customers.

  2. Click Templates.

Note:

When creating a Shopify segment, you do not need to filter for email subscription status. Seguno only sends to customers who have accepted marketing. Because of this, the delivered email count may be lower than the total segment size.

Seguno Email Marketing metafields

Seguno provides metafields that can be used in Shopify segments to target subscribers based on newsletter engagement.

These metafields update after each send in near real time.

Available metafields:

  • seguno.last_sent_date

    • The last date a subscriber received an email from Seguno Email

  • seguno.last_open_date

    • The last date a subscriber opened an email from Seguno Email

  • seguno.last_click_date

    • The last date a subscriber clicked an email from Seguno Email

  • seguno.sends_since_last_open

    • The total count of newsletters sent to that subscriber since they opened an email from Seguno Email (The larger the number, the more newsletters they have not opened.)

  • seguno.sends_since_last_click

    • The total number of newsletters sent to that subscriber since they clicked an email from Seguno Email (The larger the number, the more newsletters they have not clicked)

To find these metafield filters:

  1. From the Shopify admin, go to Customers

  2. Click the expand arrow

  3. Click in the segment creator textbox

  4. Type the filter name or scroll through the list of filters to find your desired seguno metafield.

Targeting based on previous email activity

Previous email activity targeting is built directly into Seguno. It targets subscribers based on engagement with specific newsletters or automations that have already been sent.

You can include or exclude subscribers based on whether they:

  • Received an email

  • Opened an email

  • Clicked a link

  • Converted after engaging with the email

Each activity is evaluated independently. Targeting subscribers who opened does not exclude those who clicked or converted unless those activities are explicitly excluded.

Example use cases:

  • Send a reminder to subscribers who opened but did not click

  • Thank subscribers who clicked but did not purchase

  • Exclude subscribers who already engaged with an announcement

Send an email using segments in Seguno

Choose which segments to include or exclude when editing the recipients for a newsletter.

Steps to send an email using segments:

  1. From the Newsletter detail page, click Edit in the Recipients section.

  2. To send the email to specific segments, select Subscribers within specific segments.

  3. Select one or multiple segments from the search bar.

  4. To exclude specific segments from receiving the email, select Exclude customers within specific segments.

  5. Select one or multiple segments from the search bar.

  6. Click Save.

Note: If a customer is part of multiple activity targeting, Seguno will only email that customer once. If a customer is included in both the intended to receive the email and an excluded activity, Seguno will not send the email to that customer.

Default Exclusion Segments

Choose segments to exclude when sending any email in Seguno automatically.

To set a Default exclusion segment:

  1. Create the exclusion segment in Shopify.

  2. In Seguno Email: Go to Settings.

  3. Scroll to Excluded recipients.

  4. Select one or multiple segments.

  5. Click Save.

This process automatically adds the segments to the exclusions list for the recipients of the newsletter and works for creating new newsletters and duplicating existing ones.

Carry recipients to duplicate newsletters

When duplicating a sent newsletter, you can carry over included and excluded recipients.

To carry over previous recipients to the duplicated newsletter:

  1. Select the sent newsletter.

  2. Click Actions, then Duplicate.

  3. Complete the required fields.

  4. Select "Include recipients."

This action will overrule any Default exclusion settings, so they will not apply to the duplicate newsletter.
