Updated over a month ago

By pairing your Seguno's language options with your Shopify customer segments, you can communicate with each of your subscribers in the language they were shopping in when they subscribed.

Seguno's multi-language feature currently supports twenty-five languages:

Albanian

Chinese (Traditional)

Croatian

Czech

Danish

Dutch

English (Default)

Finnish

German

Greek

Hungarian

Indonesian

Italian

Japanese

Korean

Lithuanian

Norwegian (Bokmål)

Polish

Spanish

Swedish

Thai

Turkish

Vietnamese

Please contact Seguno Support if you need support for a different language.

Note: This feature is currently limited to translating the default terms of your newsletters, with some exciting updates planned to support translating product details, multi-currency pricing, and automations.

Set your Shopify store to support multiple languages

Translating your store's content can lead to increased sales because your international customers can better understand your content.

To add a language to your Shopify store:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings.

  2. Select Languages.

  3. Click Add language.

Tip: Use Shopify's Translate & Adapt and Geolocation apps to help translate your storefront and guide your customers to their preferred language. Similar third-party apps may be available.

Collect language preferences and create segments

When a customer subscribes to emails from your shop, the shop language is captured and added to their customer record as their preferred language. You may also update a customer's language by editing their customer details.

edit customer language preferences

Generally, all theme-supported email capture points will record the language preference of new customers and subscribers, as well as all Seguno-powered popups and forms. Not all third-party apps record language preferences, and we strongly recommend that you test your site for sign-ups in each configured localization.

Tip: Use Seguno: Popups and Exit Intent to build unlimited language-specific popups for each translated version of your shop. Seguno Popups has a free plan available and unlimited is just $10/mo for paid Seguno Email users.

Create customer segments

Now that your customers can select preferred languages, you'll need to build segments to use to send the correct newsletter translation to each group.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Customers

  2. Use the customer_language attribute to build segments based on the language code

You may build the segments by using the country codes directly:

Croatian

Dutch

Note: Language codes are only available in segments if at least one customer has selected that language.

You may also add location or tag criteria to your language segments if you've been recording language preferences in different ways previously.

Add and edit languages in your Seguno account

Adding a language will translate the phrases that are automatically added to your emails, such as your discount description, unsubscribe action, and more. While one language is set as your default, having multiple languages allows you to quickly create language-specific versions of your newsletters.

To add multiple languages to your Seguno account:

  1. Navigate to the Settings page.

  2. In the Localization section, click Add language.

To edit language translations for common terms:

  1. Navigate to the Settings page.

  2. In the Localization section, click Edit languages.

  3. Use the language dropdown to select the language you'd like to edit.

  4. Edit the text, click Save

Your new language will now be available to select when creating a newsletter or in the email editor.

Note: Language settings do not currently include product details or converted currency. Those features will be available when support for Shopify Markets is added in the future.

Build a language-specific newsletter

When creating a newsletter with multiple languages in your account, you will now be able to select which language to use for common terms.

select a language when creating a newsletter

Using a language other than your default will automatically take your email off your shared theme, so it will not impact your other emails if you need to customize your header and footer.

Once you've created your newsletter, it is very important to select the recipients correctly when scheduling. Use the language segments to target a specific language. Return to this step.

send a newsletter to a specific language segment

Alternatively, you may use an exclusion segment so that you can easily target other non-language-specific segments.

Create additional language-specific emails by creating a new newsletter entirely, or duplicate your newsletter and change the language in the email editor.

Warning: When using integrated Product or Collection sections, we recommend hiding the product titles and prices if you are not using the primary language for your account. These sections are not currently included in the translation and could cause you to have multiple languages within the email.
