Automations in Seguno Email Marketing are triggered email workflows that send to individual subscribers based on specific actions or events, such as signing up, making a purchase, or receiving a customer tag. Use automations to send timely, targeted emails without manual effort.
Seguno's ready-to-activate automations include built-in best practices and require no custom scripting or theme updates.
Types of automations
Automations in Seguno Email Marketing watch for subscribers to take specific actions. Each subscriber determines which automated emails they receive based on their behavior. There are five trigger categories:
Subscriber activity - Triggers based on a new subscriber signing up or a subscriber having an expiration date for a Seguno-issued discount code approaching.
Commerce activity - Triggers based on order data and order status changes. Use these for purchase-based marketing across the customer lifecycle.
Product purchased - Triggers when a subscribed customer purchases a specified product or collection and that order has been fulfilled. Use this for care tips, reorder reminders, and similar follow-ups.
Customer tagged - Triggers when a specific customer tag is applied to a subscriber. These automations are flexible and powerful when paired with an effective tagging strategy.
Blog post announcement - Scans recent blog posts to find any that have not been shared with your subscribers, then creates an announcement newsletter using a Seguno template.
Note:
Commerce activity, customer tagged, and product purchased automations are not a substitute for Shopify transactional notifications for order status. Seguno only sends emails to subscribers who have opted in to marketing. These emails are intended exclusively for marketing purposes.
Components of an automation
Each automation in Seguno Email Marketing has three structural components: a Start card, an email list, and an End card. An optional Exclusion card is also available.
Start card
The Start card defines the qualifying action or event that enrolls a subscriber into the automation. Click Edit to view and configure sending options. Sending options vary by automation type.
Email list
Automations can include a single email or a series of emails. Each email card displays:
Delay - The time between the previous step and this email send
Email preview - Click the preview image to open the email editor
Reporting metrics - Stats specific to this email within the series
Discount icon - Appears when a discount is active; click it to view discount details
Activation button - Toggle individual emails on or off within the automation
Actions drop-down - Update content, assign a discount, preview the email, view recipient engagement, or delete the email
Drag handles - Click and hold to reorder emails in the series
Subscriber count - Displays how many subscribers are at each stage
Note:
If an automation contains only one email, you cannot delete that email. To stop sending, use the toggle on the automation summary card instead.
End card
The End card defines the qualifying action or event that removes a subscriber from the automation. Depending on the automation type, additional end criteria options may be available. Click Edit to view and configure those options.
Exclusion card
To prevent an otherwise eligible subscriber from starting or continuing in an automation, apply a tag to their customer record and assign that tag as an exclusion for the automation.
How to activate an automation
Open Seguno Email Marketing and navigate to the Automations page.
Locate the automation you want to activate.
Toggle the switch on the automation summary card to the on position.
Once activated, any new qualifying event will trigger the automation for eligible subscribers. To stop all sending from an automation, toggle the same switch to the off position.
Note:
Automations are not retroactive. Subscribers who met the trigger criteria before the automation was activated will not receive emails.
FAQs
Can I send an automation to subscribers who signed up before I activated it?
No. Automations in Seguno Email Marketing are not retroactive. Only subscribers who trigger the qualifying event after the automation is activated will receive emails.
Can I have more than one email in an automation?
Yes. Automations support a series of emails. Use the delay setting on each email card to control the timing between sends, and use drag handles to reorder emails in the series.
What is the difference between an automation and a newsletter in Seguno Email Marketing?
A newsletter is a one-time send to a defined list of subscribers. An automation is a triggered workflow that sends to individual subscribers based on a specific action or event, such as a purchase or a new signup.
